چکیده

It has been shown earlier (1) that the metabolism of carbohydrate is disturbed in scorbutic guinea pigs as evidenced by diminished glucose tolerance, deposition of liver glycogen, and insulin content of the pancreas. Although the adrenalin content of the adrenals of scorbutic guinea pigs is increased, it has been shown by removing the adrenal medulla that adrenalin is not responsible for the lower glucose tolerance observed in scurvy (2). It has also been reported that the altered carbohydrate metabolism observed in scorbutic guinea pigs is not due to either hypoor hyperthyroidism (3). The adrenal cortex is intimately related to the carbohydrate metabolism. It was, therefore, of interest to find out whether the hormone of the adrenal cortex is affected in scorbutic guinea pigs. Because of the presence of a small quantity of the steroid hormone in the adrenal gland, it is difficult to estimate it. Cholesterol and ascorbic acid, however, appear to be related to the formation of the adrenal cortical hormone. Injection of the adrenocorticotropic hormone of the pituitary in rats and guinea pigs has been found to lower both the ascorbic acid and cholesterol content of the adrenal glands (4). In the present investigation total cholesterol and ascorbic acid concentrations of adrenal glands of scorbutic guinea pigs and paired, fed, normal guinea pigs have been estimated with the purpose of finding out the function of the adrenal cortex in scorbutic guinea pigs.

Effects of ascorbic acid deficiency on adrenal mitochondrial hydroxylations in guinea pigs.

The effect of ascorbic acid deficiency on adrenal hydroxylation of cholesterol and deoxycorticosterone in guinea pigs was studied by using mitochondria and isolated cytochrome P-450 fractions. The effects obtained were compared with the effects of long-term treatment with ACTH. Advanced scurvy as well as treatment with ACTH resulted in an increase in the weight of the adrenals, the total amount...

Lowered cholesterol catabolism in guinea pigs with chronic ascorbic acid deficiency.

There is much disagreement regarding the effects of acute ascorbic acid deficiency on cholesterol metabolism in the guinea pig (1-6). The contradictions in results may be explained to a certain extent by the dynamic character of avitaminosis C development, during which the character of metabolic disturbances is changed according to development of scurvy. When following the dynamics of the chang...

URINARY excretion of 17-ketosteroids in scurvy.

Cholesterol and ascorbic acid of adrenals are significantly diminished in scorbutic guinea pigs (1). As these substances appear to be related to the formation of adrenal cortical hormone (a), it has been indicated that the secretion of this hormone might diminish in scurvy. The urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids in females is said to depend almost entirely on the activity of the adrenal corte...

The silver nitrate staining reaction for ascorbic acid in the adrenal, pituitary and ovary of various species of animals.

SZENT-GY6RYGI [1928] has demonstrated that when a section of the adrenal of the ox is immersed in 0 4 % AgNO3 solution, its cortex darkens owing to the deposition of metallic silver. The reduction, he concluded, was due to the presence of ascorbic acid (hexuronic acid). In view of the recent observations on the high and persistent antiscorbutic activity of ascorbic acid it became obvious that t...
